A cake smash is a type of photo session we could do every single day and never get sick of it. It was just SO much fun. For those of you who have never done a cake smash or seen one done, it's fun and just hilarious. We have done shots of Aubree all year and were lucky enough to do a cake smash session with her. There are a lot of things that go into these sessions and they are really a hit or miss. There were a few moments during this when we were convinced it wasn't going to work, but it did. Aubree's mom made the amazing board that you see in the first photo. It really added to the shoot, for obvious reasons. I always thought that the decor had to be really extreme in the types of shoots, but that isn't necessarily the case.
This is another session that was shot in our living room. We cleared it out again and simply used a white backdrop. We taped up balloons for the backdrop initially, but Aubree played with them so much that we were concerned that she wasn't going to be interested in the cake. It was to the point where when we would take a balloon away, she would know it and she was not pleased with us. Eventually though, we were able to pull her interest from the balloons and to the cake, which she devoured.
Some things we learned from this session, as it was our first of its type - keep shooting, be patient, and don't skip the little things. Shots of the destroyed cake, feet covered in cake, and more are great additions.
